Pharmacological Treatment of Negative Symptoms

Abstract
The development of effective pharmacologic treatments for the negative symptoms of schizophrenia has become a major objective in recent years.
The purpose of this review will be to consider some of the major issues concerning the pharmacologic treatment of negative symptoms and to review the evidence concerning the effect of antipsychotic and other durgs on negative symptoms.
the preponderance of evidece from large controlled studies indicated that negative symptoms can respond to antipsychotic, especially clozapine, and other drug treatment in at least a substantial subgroup of schizophrenic patients. However, the
evidence
suggests that the response of negative symptoms is generally slower and less satisfactory than the response to positive symptoms. Further studies are needed to assess the effect of antipsychotics and other drugs on negative symptoms utilizing
standardized instruments specifically designed to rate negative symptoms and with attention to the possibility that there are discrete subtypes of negative symptom.
